Well cushioned trail shoesI have been at huge TIMP fan but after the last edition that was terrible quality I had to try something new and I am glad I did! Pros- GREAT cushioning and protection, wide but not too wide toe box, no pain after 15 + mile trail runs, they make my feet (and knees) so happy! Cons- The tongue cuts into ankle- PLEASE fix this Altra! The heel is a little too wide. Size up a half size if you're not sure.

Women's Altra Olympus design changedI think that Altra changed the design of their women's Olympus model. I found the new model to be narrower in the toe shorter, which does not work for someone like myself who has bunions. Fortunately, Running Wearhouse was wonderful about letting me return the shoes AND their support rep listened to my needs and recommended a totally different brand of shoes that suits me even better than Altra!

Altra Olympus 5I use these for hiking and trail running. The fit is great and the cushioning is great. I had read about separation of the sole but so far so good I have only been wearing them for a month or so time will tell. The fabric of the shoe seems suspect for rough trails but have not torn it yet. So far they have held up well and work great in the trail.

my current one and onlyI hope Altra stays with this version. The improvement could be a little less padding in the very back pressing on the achilles. One pair does it, the other does not. On the pair that it does, it is a big problem. otherwise, love them. run slightly smaller and snugger (good news) than the last version. less ankle twisting and great protection over rocky terrain.

Self Destructed on the PCTI tested the Olympus for several months prior to ordering 3 pairs to take on the PCT. Once on the trail they began to fall apart after the 1st week of hiking. On all 3 pairs the midsole broke down quickly & the tread delaminated. Each pair lasted less than 250 miles before being replaced .They worked great & were comfortable for road & trail running, but I would not recommend them if you are planning on using them on a Thru-Hike.

I liked Olympus 4 betterOlympus 4 would last 700-750 miles and I still felt good cushioning. After 300+ miles on Olympus 5 I feel that the cushion is already worn off. Sucks!

great support, comfort and tractionThis is my third and by far favorite Olympus! Comfortable straight out of the box on a 7 mile hard trail run. This model as opposed to two others doesn't bruise my toes against the front of the shoe. A lot more cushion than the previous model which felt very stiff.

Fit changed a bit & what's up with the laces?I've been running in 10.5 in the Olympus since the first version. Had to return 10.5 and size up to 11 for this iteration. Just a little less room in the toes must have made it just small for me (mostly going downhill). After sizing up, they are great, except for the laces. Why are the laces so short on the Olympus 5? The heel has always been a little sloppy for me and I have to use heel lock lacing to keep them in place. It's tough to do with these laces and the bows end up being pretty tiny. It would be impossible with cold fingers. After breaking things in a bit, it got a little better, but still comically short. Running Warehouse is awesome, as always!

Happily surprisedI was looking for a better fit and more cushion trail shoe for races more than 50m. I like the amount of cushion and comfort. Not as grippy as the LPs, but a better fit for me as my foot doesn't slide around in them as much as the LPs. I don't like the heel lock capabilities, the short laces or non existent tongue. I like the overall fit, level of cushion, trail feel and foot control. Almost perfect.

Olympus continues to not live up to its nameThe new Olympus continues to not have enough room in the toe box. The front of the shoe slopes up too quickly. Olympus 1 and 2 were my favorite all time shoes, but 3, 4, and 5 will give you blisters and cramped toes, especially if your running anything that’s not flat.

These shoes are the bomb!My feet have always been on the difficult side and now that I have neuropathy in both of them finding a shoe that feels comfortable is quite a challenge as my feet hurt and feel tight even when I am barefoot. Even suggestions from my podiatrist on where to purchase comfortable, sturdily built and still attractive shoes did nothing. Then my son and daughter-in-law mentioned Running Warehouse, the awesome no questions asked guarantee and especially the wide toe toe box fit. I could hardly wait to get home and order a pair. My first pair were too big, no problem, I exchanged them for a smaller size Olympus Woman's 9.5. The fit: spectacular. My second pair I decided to try another style. They fit but not as great as the first pair, I exchanged them and now have two pair of shoes that not do not squeeze my feet plus the support and cushioning is exceptional. They feel great, look great and are worth every penny. This is one of the few reviews you will see coming from a consumer that has never hiked, run, did off trail walking, marathons or anything similar. Running Warehouse is the place to be and Altra is the style for me.

Too NarrowI had two pairs of the Olympus 4's in size 11 and they were fantastic. The 4's were my go to shoe for runs over 25 miles. I am very sad to discover that the 5's are much narrower in the midfoot and toe box. I ordered size 11.5's and 12's, both were far too narrow. I think if I went up to a size 12.5 they would be too long, so I didn't order them. I am very disappointed, I still love the lone peaks, but they don't have enough cushion for me when running over 25 miles.

Bounce in my step!My physical therapist told me I needed something with a little bit more cushion in my step I own two other pairs of Altra's both alone peak trail runners!! I love them!! It took me a bit of time to get used to a non zero degree shoe but I have noticed a decrease in fatigue at the end of my day and that is huge! Thanks Altra and thanks RW for making it accessible to get some game changing sneaks!!

Very CloseI have been going back and forth between Hoka Speedgoat and Altra Olympus. Past Olympus models have felt like clown shoes, so i would eventually go back to a sleeker style elsewhere. This is very close. Same support on hard and rocky terrain, more narrow base, which I like better …less ankle twisting. Mostly, the new cuff around the ankle makes the shoe fit so much better. They would be close to perfect if the toe area was a little softer. There is no give if your toes hit the fronts.

Altra olympusThese shoes are very comfortable. I normally wear the lone peak but I wanted a little more to my shoes that just a flat feeling bottom. These feel like they have a bit more arch support and the softness underneath is great. They work awesome on trails too! I would size up a 1/2 size from the lone peak

DisappointedFirst, I have been buying Altra trail runners (Timp, Lone Peak & Olympus 4) for last 5 years. The Olympus 4 is a beast. Why I returned Olympus 5: 1) heel slippage was horrible just walking inside house & even with top eyelet tied; 2) shoe laces way too short; 3) purchased the ‘brown/red' color, which looks like brown & red online but in reality is salmon and deep rose pink (kind of ugh!). Found last year model of Olympus 4 in my size & purchased those again.

I want to love these but I cannotLook I love Altra and I only wear Altra shoes. This new heal they got going on in the shoes are not good. On these the heal cup was not quit wide enough. The 4's had a much better heal cup. If they would take the heal of the Altra tempo and slap it on the Olympus 5's you would have a perfect shoe in my opinion. The padding in the heal was rubbing the soft parts of my heals and that was not good. But I love the looks, hands down.

Great ShoeRellay love this shoe. It is great on the trail and has been helpful in eliminating a few issues I have.

It looks good howeverFor some shoes the only way to see if they work is to take them out on your favorite dirt single track. Such was the case with the Olympus 5. Just stepping in and hopping around the kitchen floor wasn't enough. 1. On the trail- this was a rough ride. The wide EVA platform with the rigid Vibram outsole wants to land flat and it taking your foot with it, ready or not. I tend to land on outside edge. 2. I was expecting 33 millimeters of soft cushy landings. Nope, a very firm, sometimes hard and unforgiving landings. 3. Climbing is tough, especially coming from Saucony-Perigrine / Hoka-SG shoes. The zero drop is most noticeable here , I had to bend my knees more. 4. Overall- Great looking shoes. The fit is acceptable. The geometry of the shoe is radically different than a conventional trail shoe like Saucony or Hoka. The shape of the shoe would take a long time to get used to. For me I would have to dedicate an entire season or even years for my body's' physiology to adapt to these shoes. So, as much as I wanted to like and use Altra shoes, they simply do not work for me.

MIles of improvementThe new heel support really saddles your heels while providing the original toe box room! For me the heel support now allows me to go up 1/2 size to have the toe room I like, and not see outer surface tears. Surface grip is good as usual. If you use the last set of lace holes, the shoelaces are short for a double knot tying method.

Cushioned comfortHave been wanting to try Altra for some time. Wasn't sure I could find a cushioned pair without a stacked heel. These are super comfortable and the tread is sturdy.

Worth the Pretty PennyThe Olympus 5.0 is an excellent shoe. There is honestly nothing I can say bad about them. I feel that they are quite similar to the 4.0 and both shoes are nearly interchangeable. The 5.0 is a shoe that you can wear on a 6 mile trail run or a 100 mile endurance run without ever taking them off. There were no hot spots on my feet or toes after running a 100 miler. As usual, the toe box gave my toes ample room to splay as my feet swelled in the heat. The gusseted tongue (combined with the Altra gaiters), let no sand or pebbles in my shoes. I will use these shoes for my next mountain 100 miler for sure.

PerfectedFits right out of the box, no break in required. Feels just like the Olympus 4 - maybe slightly lighter. I was sketched by the loop on the heel for chaffing but I can't feel it. If you're thinking about these just do it. You won't be disappointed.

Great on TrailBought these for a JMT through hike. They are cushioned enough to be very comfortable on long days over rough trail, wide enough to be stable on same terrain. I've put >250 miles on these and they work great.

Compared to the 4This review is specific to comparing the Olympus 5 to the Olympus 4, which I owned 3 pairs of. The 4 was not true to size for me, kinda in between sizes, and the heel lockdown was lacking. Very loose heel counter area, even sized down half a size and using a runners knot, to the degree I had to stop wearing the shoe altogether as much as I liked it. The 5 has fixed both issues. True to size and the heel counter is beefed up and has zero heel slippage for me. I don't even have to use a runners knot. Tie and go. I have no idea how people can say this model has heel slippage. IMO, it has one of the best heel counters in the game now and is much better than the Speedgoat 5 which I own 2 pairs of. If you liked the 4 except for the fit, I'd give the 5 a try. I was reluctant after being burned by Altras so many times but I'm glad I did.

Better heel holdI have about 40 hiking miles on these. Mostly hills. I've gone through about 12 pairs of the 4s. Only real change I've noticed (and its a good one) is the heel collar is better for holding your heel in place. The cushioning seems about the same as the 4s. One negative- they seem to be about 1/4 to 1/2 size smaller. It might be due to the more padding at the heel collar. I'll try sizing up from 13 to 14. Hopefully wont be too roomy. 13 is still workable (my size in the 4s), but down steep grades my toe on my biggest foot touches the end of the shoe.
